Vaulters, their parents, and any siblings can come. We will have potluck snacks, a white elephant (gifts under five dollars would be great), games for the kids, and a vaulting movie.

The address of our house is as follows.

910 S. Skylake Dr.

Woodland Hills.

It is a cream stucco house w/Christmas wreaths on two lights surrounding a two car garage.

AVA Membership Renewal

Membership Renewal Time -- Early Birds Claim a Great Gift!

The AVA is offering two new types of memberships: $15 for recreational vaulters who would like to join and enjoy membership benefits, and $25 for a 5-year membership for friends who would like to support vaulting. What a great idea for parents to help support Oak Hills Vaulters through the AVA for the next FIVE YEARS! The $15 Recreational fee is also a great way for non-competitive students to still enjoy the benefits of becoming an AVA member for such a cheap price!!
Both of these membership types I would HIGHLY consider.

New members who sign up between October 1 and Dec. 31 of any calendar year are members for the remainder of that year, AND for the following year. In addition, you will receive a special early registration thank you gift from the AVA -- If this is you, click here

Renewing Members: Click here if you were an AVA member previously, and are renewing your membership for 2010. Renewing members who sign up between October 1 and Dec. 31 of any calendar year are members for the remainder of that year, AND for the following year. In addition, you will receive a special early registration thank you gift from the AVA.

Remember: All vaulters, parents, loungers, etc who join before December 31st will receive a free gift from the AVA. In the past this has included vaulting stickers, an AVA promotional DVD, post cards, and more!
If you are planning on medal testing, or attending any kind of AVA event I highly recommend you get this taken care of now!

Let me know if you have any questions :]

Summer Showcase

Equestrian Vaulting
Oak Hills Vaulters Summer Showcase

Saturday, September 26th, is the day to see a spectator sport more suited to the circus. The Oak Hills Vaulters are presenting their annual Summer Showcase at their indoor barn in Salem, UT from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

For those who are not familiar with equestrian vaulting, it is a combination of dance and gymnastics performed singly, in doubles or in triples, on the back of a moving horse. The athletes pose, jump, twist and groove in rhythm on a horse to a variety of music while the horse walks, trots or canters in a circle. This fun performance is a joy for all ages. Watching the vaulters perform their routines on the horses is something you won't want to miss. Lovers of dance and lovers of horses will especially be enthralled.

The Summer Showcase is free to the public. Drinks and snacks will be available before the show starts.

Head coach Kylynn Warren has been with the team since she was old enough to walk and has seen it grow from a handful of students to over 45 vaulters.

Vaulting is an international competition sport with only two teams in the state of Utah. The Oak Hills Vaulters have competed in regional and national competitions for over eight years.

The vaulters range in age from three years old to adult.

The barn is located at 1435 E. 900 S. in Salem, UT. (Take Spanish Fork Main St. south, turn east towards Woodland Hills.)

Check out their website at: www.oakhillsvaulters.com .

Latest Email Sent Out:

Hello All!

Just a few reminders about the summer showcase on September 26th. The performance will start at 6:00pm, However ALL vaulters need to arrive no later than 4:30 pm for one extra practice. Spectators may start arriving to set up chairs as early as 5:30 pm.

Advertise:
I have attached a flyer for you to email out to all your friends or to print off and post around your town! Please please please help up advertise this event as much as possible! Hang flyers in your school, local gas stations, grocery stores, etc. If you have the ability to print larger poster size, or regular size nice, good quality, colored copies for a donation to our club, please let me know asap. We can also provide a tax write off for your donation if need be.

What to Wear:
All Vaulters will be required to wear black capri leggings or vaulting pants, black sock, and black vaulting shoes. We will also be wearing our ivault shirts if you have purchased one. If you have not purchased an ivault shirt, and do not plan to, no worries! Just have your vaulter wear a SOLID, BRIGHT colored tshirt that is one of the following colors: Hot Pink, Yellow, Green, Red, or Orange. All vaulters are also required to wear a black tank top, tshirt, or unitard under their colored tshirt. This black shirt will need to be tucked into the vaulters pants to help prevent midriffs from showing. If you have any questions about what your vaulter needs to wear, please let me know.

Program:
I have attached a ROUGH DRAFT file of the program. I will probably be changing orders/horses around etc. I just need you to check and make sure you vaulter IS ON the program, as well as check to see if I have all spelling correct. Like I said, this is just a rough draft so please help me to correct any errors you may find. If you know someone who would like to be a sponsor of this event please let me know as well. Donations as small as $25 will get their company name on the back of our program, as well as an announcement during our show. Larger donations have the opportunity to make it on our flyer, as well as hanging their company banner in the arena during our performance.

Concessions Stand:
I was thinking of having a 'bake sale' for this year's concession stand during our performance. If you would be willing to donate cookies, peanut butter bars, cupcakes, ect to our stand, please let me know. Also, if you are able to help out with running our concessions stand either before or during intermission, please let me know as well. We will also be selling drinks and the remainder of our ivault shirts in the concessions as well. We want to try our best to make this an easy/high profit stand so if you have any suggestions I am more than open to any ideas you may have!

Other Items of Business:

Tshirts: We still have plenty of tshirts in most colors/sizes for sale! If you did not receive yours, talk to your coach about it during class!

Payson Parade: Unfortunately we did not make the deadline to be in this year's Payson Parade...So I hope you all have a fun Labor Day Weekend!!

Vegas: If you are planning on going, please get back to me as soon as possible so I can get everything entered without to much stress near the end of the month. I would like to start at least entering horses and vaulters into the online system.
You are responsible for letting me know which class numbers you would like to participate in so I can enter you in the online entry system. Please do this as soon as possible if you know that you are already going.
All USEF classes (Bronze and higher) will be held on Sunday this year, leaving Copper, Trot, Walk, and Barrel classes for Saturday.

State Fair: Our Demo team was scheduled to perform at the State Fair, Thursday Sept. 10th. However, after talking it over with the fair committee, it has been decided that with it being the very first day of the fair we would not really have a crowd this year. Considering we would all have to leave school early, drive to SLC, and be ready to perform by 4:00; it isn't really worth our trip this year. The committee has promised us a better time slot for next years fair.

Thank you so much for all of your support and patience in helping to make our vaulting program wonderful!

Happy Vaulting!
KyLynn

Salem Parade and Updates

Thank you for everyone that attended the Salem City Parade! We had a blast being able to have the chance to perform for our hometown! Salem City really appreciated us bringing in something new to their parade this year. I hope everyone had a great time. I do have a few missing items (shoes, jackets, waterbottles) that I picked up after the parade. If you are missing anything please check in the stretching stall for those items.

We will be having a dress rehearsal this coming Thursday at 4:30 for all demo team vaulters. Our performance at the County Fair will be at 3:00 Friday afternoon at the Spanish Fork fairgrounds in the main arena. Demo Team Vaulters will need to arrive by 2:00 at the fairgrounds in the same attire that we wore to the Heritage Demo.

Please let all your family and friends know about this fun, free event! What a great way to introduce them to the sport of vaulting! We would love all your support at the fair, so I hope to see you there!

I can’t believe school starts so soon! Remember that we will be taking off vaulting this coming week: August 17th* through the 22th* to let you all get a chance to settle in your new busy schedules! We will resume classes on Monday August 24th* with our new fall schedule.

A few people have expressed conflict with the Tuesday 5:30 - 7:00 beginning canter class. I may be changing this class around, I'm just trying to figure out a time that will work into the schedule. (it may be moving to Saturday morning, so let me know if that won't work for you either) But for now, if you are scheduled to be in that class just come when you can and I will let you know more details very soon.

Remember that our Summer Showcase event has been scheduled for September 26th from 6:00-8:00pm at Oak Hills. All vaulters should have their routines memorized as well as their music picked out, and brought into their coaches no later than August 30th. I will be sending out a program soon for you to check over spelling, times, etc. on each of your vaulters.

If you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them for you :] Have a great rest of your summer and remember that there will be NO vaulting classes held next week.

Thank You,

KyLynn

Parade/Calendar

We will be involved in this years Salem City Parade on August 8th. This will be a great opportunity to have the chance to show our home town what we have to offer so close to them! All parade participants need to access the staging area via the Tesoro Gas Station at 500 West onto 300 South. DO NOT USE 300 WEST! Judging begins at 9:30 am which means we need to have our float, horses, and vaulters ready no later than 9:00 am. All Vaulters should arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 am on parade day.

The horses and vaulting barrel trailer will be there at 8:00 am to get things decorated and ready to go. Parade attire will consist of what we wore to the Provo Freedom Festival Parade. Black pants or capris, vaulting shoes, your red or navy oak hills shirt, or a plain red, white, or navy tshirt with NO LOGOS. You will also need to wear a white or black tank top, or tshirt that can be used as an under shirt for tucking in! NO MIDRIFFS SHOWING!! Your undershirt will need to be able to stay tucked in while you do a handstand and cartwheel.

We will be running our 'performances' for this parade just like we did for Provo; mainly our double/triple routines with a few individuals here and there. If you would like to come by for pictures of the float, horses, or your vaulters, please take care of that BEFORE the parade starts.

If you have any questions regarding the parade, please let me know.

What the rest of our summer looks like so far:

August 8th: Salem Days Parade 8:30 am

Heritage School Demo

Actually turned out to be TONS of fun!! We had them singing along to our music and shouting at whatever they liked :]
Honestly, one of our best demos! So glad we had the opportunity!

Provo Parade 2009

The parade was such a hit! I'm glad that we had the opportunity to educate over 60.000 people about our sport! All the girls had such a fun time showing off and I'm sure we'll get lots of business from the event as well. We passed out over 1,000 flyers and they were all gone before the parade was over. People kept yelling at us to get them a flyer and parents kept asking me how they could get their kids involved! It was great to see so much interest in our sport :)
Some guy even yelled out to us: 'now THATS the future of america!' which was the parade theme! It was especially fun to see all the reactions from the audience.

Vaulting Camp

Oak Hills Vaulters Summer Camp

KyLynn James Warren

Oak Hills Vaulters hosted it’s first ever Summer Vaulting Camp June 17th-20th. The Camp was attended by 30 vaulters ages six to adult with vaulters ranging in skill level from very beginning walk to Silver. Vaulters and campers had the option to spend the night at camp, or arrive each morning for a full day of fun!

Camp opened each morning with completing various horse chores, preparing ones lunch for the day, taking special notes and instructions in their own ‘camp notebook,’ stretching, and of course a lot of fun and games! Our camp was split into three different groups and teams and rotated between barrel work, horse time, and dance instruction. Compulsories were broken down into each technicality and focused on both the horse and barrel. Freestyles were added to and perfected as well as our choreographing and creativity was worked on with the little help of a few balloons!

Special ‘field trips’ and activities involved swimming, volleyball games, playing in the park, and fun night games and dance off routines! Evenings were spent enjoying each others company, roasting s’mores around the campfire, snipe hunting, and playing hide-n-go-seek throughout the stables. Special non-vaulting clinicians were brought in to emphasize the importance of horse care and barn safety.

Our last few hours of camp were filled with a ‘dance-off’ performance by each team followed by awards for the winning team. Many friendships were made and strengthened for all during the days and nights we spent with each other.

Our summer vaulting camp was the highlight of the summer for many of our vaulters. We hope to have the opportunity to make this into an annual event! A special thanks to all the parents, loungers, clinicians, and horse owners involved in making this a week we are all sure to remember.

Medal Testing Results

Medal Testing Comes to Utah

KyLynn James Warren

An AVA judge has not been brought out to Utah for an AVA event since 1996 when Oak Hills first registered as a club with the AVA and hosted a medal testing event. Judge Kendel Edmunds changed that when she recently visited the Oak Hills and Technique Vaulters at the Oak Hills Stables owned by MaryAnn Ford in Salem, Utah.

There was a whirlwind of activity as the vaulters competed in a full day of medal testing and a much appreciated Q & A session with the judge. With participation of two clubs, 36 athletes competed for Silver, Bronze, Trot, and Novice pin medals Coaches, loungers, parents, and vaulters were all very happy with the pleasant and fun atmosphere Kendel created. All 36 vaulters successfully passed their medals including three bronze with honors awards, three commended awards, and one silver commended award.

Oak Hills hopes to have the opportunity to host many more AVA and even USEF recognized events in the near future. Being able to host an AVA judge and to put on a medal testing event was a great learning experience and practice for the club to get a better idea of how it might be to run a full scale competition. Kendel was such a joy to have and the team can’t wait to bring her out again for another testing or competition in the near future. The vaulters, loungers, parents, and coaches were each able to take away something different from their new and fun experience.

Thanks to the AVA Grant, for without it, this opportunity would not have been possible. Many thanks go out to a number of people including support form the AVA Grants Committee chaired by Jan Garrod for helping make this event happen. Special thanks to Kendel for all your help and encouragement, and especially to the AVA for helping the teams learn and grow!

Cami Swan-Bronze Medalist, age 17: “I have been vaulting for over eight years and had never medal tested. When my club decided to host our own medal test, I knew that it was my time to catch up. I was excited to have Kendel Edmunds come to Utah to visit our club, the Oak Hills Vaulters.

I applied for my bronze and trot medals and practiced my compulsory and freestyle moves for one month straight. I was more excited than nervous. Even when our canter horse Ferrari’s hocks swelled up the week of the testing, I still felt confident performing on our backup horse, Pedro, who was more pony sized. But after a lot of Sore No More and conditioning, Ferrari’s swelling had gone down by the awaited day.

On testing day, I believe that I performed as well as I could have and was awarded my bronze medal with honors in the morning, followed by my trot medal a couple of hours later.

I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to fly Kendel out to Utah. She was a great judge who had a lot of insight and vaulting knowledge to offer us.”

Brooke Watkins-Trot Medalist and PreCanter Vaulter, age 16: “Dedicated to our vaulting horses Ferrari and Stewart. Thank you guys for always being there for us. We love you!

Eyes of One

As we run in,

step in step together now

I look back on the week

and how I want to make you proud

The tension is rising,

as you mount.

But once your on,

you’ll fill the part

As one we move,

around and round

The music flows

through us now

As you move,

upon my back,

I feel a part of you

The music stops as you dismount

and the crowd stand and cheers

You give me a hug,

to let me know I did my job

and that your proud of who I am today

Then as we run out

step in step

I look back on the week,

and how I made you proud

Teri Watkins (Vaulting Mother): “This year since Nationals is located so far away in Kentucky our club decided to focus on Medal Testing. Our family is two years new to the world of vaulting so Medal Testing was yet another adventure awaiting our discovery.

WOW! What a positive experience this has been for all participating vaulters who walked away with smiling faces clutching their medals and pins on a somewhat overcast Utah day. Medal Testing is a great way for vaulters to measure their own skills against a national standard and to receive a tangible recognition. It is also a great way for beginners to gain some measured performance experience in a less stressful environment than that of a competition. Self confidence is built, friendships enjoyed, and team spirit increased.

An added bonus was the knowledge and insight we received from the Judge at our Q & A clinic. What is the best way to hold when I mount? What moves are best to incorporate into a Bronze level freestyle? What are the judges looking for as vaulters move up to the different levels? How do I increase my “stand” score from a 9.0 to a 10.0? Many other questions of the like were addressed and graciously answered by Kendel. Medal Testing added a whole new dimension to our own wonderful world of Vaulting!”

Jentry Cole -Trot Medalist and PreCanter Vaulter, age 10: “I really enjoyed testing for my trot medal and novice canter pin because it is a chance for me to be better. I’m so glad that our horses were good and that everyone performed well and passed with their goals in mind. Vaulting is so much fun and I can’t wait to be able to test for my Bronze medal soon, and hope to one day have my gold medal.”

Mary Allison (Vaulting Mother): “The day of AVA medal testing was a really interesting day for me, the parent of a newer vaulter, and someone who up until June of last year, had heard nothing of the sport.

I’ve seen many displays of the sport since that time, and every time it has been a somewhat boisterous event with lots of loud music and really entertaining environment. Medal Test day was indeed entertaining, but in a different sort of way. This was medal testing; every vaulting student willing to test was there; all determined to reach their next level of advancement. Ages from as young as four all the way to experienced adult; and all completely quiet, reverent even, to allow the judge to assess and the vaulter to concentrate. That was notable, but the spirit of support was most prevalent.

Everyone there was into each performance as well as just supporting the vaulters. Parents and family were there, mostly cheering silently from the sides. But of course that’s typical for most of their events. Another team (Technique) was also in attendance. Even they seemed just as right at home and genuinely seemed to care about the vaulter as well as the quality of work they had so dedicated themselves to achieve. Our judge was unbiased, yet still very focused on fairly giving each individual every chance to succeed, and even offered a short clinic Q & A session to help vaulters gain even more from their experience.

The spirit of sportsmanship and goodwill was prominent throughout the testing. From the beginning to the presentation of medals, only an uplifting feeling was experienced by everyone I spoke to. Furthermore the professionalism that was evident in the condition of the facilities, and in the little details of the program was very inspiring. I was very proud of each of our team members, coaches, and all those that helped put together the event. I am sure this added to my daughter’s sense of purpose and pride having attended this medal testing. I know it did mine!

Jessie Ahlborn -Trot Medalist and PreCanter Vaulter, age 14: “This was my first time doing medal testing. I wasn’t really quite sure about what to do or how I would be judged, but in the end medal testing was a wonderful experience for me. I got to learn more about my compulsories and how to do them properly. I had a great time and happy that all my hard work paid off. But I do think you should know that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my coach KyLynn Warren, my lounger Venece Reed and Melissa Dunlevy, and our wonderful horses Ferrari and Stewart. The judge was also very amazing; she answered all of our questions without hesitation and even gave us tips on how to do better in our vaulting performances. I am so grateful for her and all the time she put into our medal testing.”
